Tips for installing home security cameras

Are you considering a home security system? Here are some great tips for installing home security cameras and creating the best video surveillance possible.

If you are considering using a home security system around your property, it is important to place the security cameras in key locations. This is very significant in creating the best video surveillance possible. To help you get started, review the following tips before installing home security cameras:

  • Place home security cameras near the most critical areas around your home. These are usually the home’s entry points, which include doors and windows around your home. A camera by each entry will allow you to always be able to see who is trying to gain access to your property.
  • Consider your neighbors privacy when installing your cameras. Each camera should be in a position that does not face or monitor their property.
  • It is important to consider the longevity of your cameras. If possible, place cameras in locations that will keep them tucked away, helping reduce their contact with outdoor elements. This also helps the aesthetics of your property. Think about the type of home security camera you will be installing. A bullet system camera has different mounting applications compared to a dome style camera. A bullet style camera typically has a sun visor or weather shield to allow mounting in more open areas, such as on a bare wall. A dome style camera does not have the same protection from the sun so it performs better under a soffit or on a wall directly below an overhang. This not only helps protect it from the sun, but other weather elements as well.
  • The last consideration to think about is lighting. Installing home security cameras around your property will require some kind of lighting for night time visibility. You can add more lighting near the camera or you can use cameras that have infra-red illuminators (IR) built into them. These types of cameras do not require additional lighting. IR cameras have small LED’s around the lens with a light sensitive monitor that detects darkening conditions that active the lights.
