Is your home protected against poisonous carbon monoxide?

CO detectors have a lifespan of 5-7 years.

I had an interesting conversation with my 12-year-old daughter about carbon monoxide (CO) and what she thought about it. When I asked her what she thought it was, she described it perfectly. She said carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is potentially deadly.

We live in the great state of Minnesota and our heating season can get a bit long. The more we use a heat source that burns fossil fuels (i.e. natural gas or propane) the more opportunities we have to get exposure to poisonous CO. With windows being closed and furnaces firing up, fall is the ideal time to check your existing CO detectors or consider adding them to your home. Not only are carbon monoxide detectors beneficial to people, they are also beneficial to our beloved pets. By having a monitored CO detector in our home we get the added benefit of someone watching over us – whether we are home or not.

When the monitored CO alarm activates the alarm system, it makes a call to the monitoring center where professionals take action and respond to our home to make sure we are OK. Another benefit of having a monitored alarm is in the event that we are not home and our family pet is. When the CO alarm activates, we have a much better outcome for saving our dog. (After all, our little dog thinks she rules the house.)

If you already have CO detectors in your home, WH Security recommends you verify their condition and test them. Carbon monoxide detectors have a specific life span and should have a label explaining how long they can be in operation. The average lifespan for CO detectors is 5 to 7 years and after that, they should be replaced. Although many people don't think about the CO detector, it is a device that may save a life.

Please take time to check your CO detectors, which should be placed on every floor of your home. If you don't have CO detection, please consider getting it.
