Summer Fire Safety

Learn how to keep you and your family safe when near fires this summer.

Summer is a time for many fun activities, including summer vacations, family reunions, camping, picnics and the Fourth of July. However, summer can bring the risk of fires and injuries due to fireworks, outdoor cooking and campfires. Keep the following safety tips in mind to ensure your family has a safe summer:

Keep in mind fire safety this summer.

  • When using fireworks, carefully read and follow the label directions.
  • Before using a grill, check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line.
  • Do not overfill propane tanks.
  • Do not wear loose clothing while cooking at a barbecue.
  • Be careful when using lighter fluid. Do not add fluid to an already lit fire.
  • Keep all matches and lighters away from children.
  • Supervise children around outdoor grills.
  • Dispose of hot coals properly by dousing them with plenty of water.
  • Never grill/barbecue in enclosed areas.
  • Make sure everyone in your family knows how to Stop, Drop and Roll in case a piece of clothing catches fire.
  • Build campfires where they will not spread, away from dry grass and leaves.
  • Never leave campfires unattended.
  • Keep plenty of water near your campfire to douse the fire when you're done.
