How to safely kickoff the holidays

The holidays offer plenty of fun and enjoyment, but don't forget about safety and security!

The holidays are a joyous time of year, but with all the events and changing of the season we sometimes forget about the different safety and security precautions that should be taken. Here are few holiday safety tips for your home:

  • With the holidays comes cold weather, which means we will be using our heaters and furnaces frequently. It is always a good idea to have an experienced person check out the equipment to ensure it is operating efficiently. Carbon monoxide (CO) is the byproduct of using gas to heat our homes, and is vented outside. When our furnaces are a little older, like mine, having a CO detector installed can add peace of mind in case something was to go wrong with your equipment. Especially since CO is an odorless and colorless gas that is dangerous to humans and our pets.
  • Frigid temperatures can also cause damage to your home, should your pipes freeze and burst. Installing freeze sensors (this links to Steve’s blog on freeze sensors) is a great way to prevent these damages from happening.
  • The holidays are also a time for traveling, and burglars know this. You can increase your holiday security if you have a security system with programmable lighting schedules. Utilize this feature to make it appear that you are still home. You can also check in on your home from a mobile device if you have Interactive Security Services from WH Security. If you don’t have a security system, ask a neighbor or a relative to check on your home from time to time while you’re away.
  • Thanksgiving sees a massive increase in cooking fires, so make sure you keep an eye on all your food and equipment. And if you’re baking a bunch of goodies for holiday parties you should also check that your smoke detectors are working properly and have fresh batteries.

If you have a security system, make sure your contact information is up to date by calling one of our representatives so that you can be notified in the event of an emergency.
Feel free to contact us in regards to your WH Security account or any of the features mentioned above at or (763) 477-3664.

Enjoy the holidays and stay safe.
