Spring planting and pruning could ward off intruders

Most people don’t realize it, but the shrubs around your home can either be a deterrent for burglars or can give them a convenient place to hide.

You have homeowner’s insurance, locks on your doors, smoke sensors, carbon monoxide sensors and a security system. What more could you possibly need to protect what’s most important to you?

Have you taken a look at the hedges and shrubs around your property? Most people don’t realize it, but the shrubs around your home can either be a deterrent for burglars or can give them a convenient place to hide.

WH Security knows how important it is to keep your family and your home safe. As you prune your shrubs and hedges this spring, be sure to cut them to three feet or shorter and keep them below window height. Taller shrubs can create a hiding place for criminals, who might lurk there and then break in when all is clear. Lower shrubs also increase visibility for your neighbors and passers by, who could report strange activity.

Trees that hang over rooftops can give thieves easy access to your roof and to second-story windows. Make sure to trim overgrown trees so you don’t invite burglars in.

If you’re planning to add landscaping to your home this spring or summer, consider adding gravel or rock beneath windows, and/or thorny bushes. The loud crunch of footsteps on rock may be enough to keep a burglar away from your property, and no one will want to crawl through thorns to get in.

To protect your home at night, consider installing motion-activated lights. They give off the appearance that someone is home and has switched on the lights. And even if you aren’t home, the lights will make it easier for neighbors to see unusual activity happening and contact the proper authorities.

WH Security also offers security cameras to help keep an eye on your property 24/7. Give us a call at 763.477.3664 to find out how we can customize a solution to keep your property safe.
