Fire Safety Throughout the Holidays

With the busy holidays around the corner, the last thing you want to worry about is dealing with the unexpected. And with this time of year accounting for a higher number of home fire accidents, you want to ensure you and your family are protected. So, what precautions can you take to help keep your family safe?

Check Decorations

Electrical problems are a leading cause of holiday fires, with faulty wiring being the number one issue.

As you’re decorating, check your your wiring for any damaged cords or frayed wires. Ensure heat sources aren’t too close to décor or trees, whether real or fake. Finally, keep your pets away from wires so they don’t chew them!

If you have a real tree, make sure you are properly watering it. Dry trees can quickly become a fire hazard. Once your tree dries out, you should remove it from your home immediately.

Holiday Cooking

When you’re busy greeting guests or catching up with family, it’s easy to forget what’s going on in the kitchen. Set loud timers to remind you when food is done cooking so it’s not forgotten in the oven. This will help keep you and your guests safe and allow you to enjoy the wonderful feast you planned!

Burning Candles

With the sun setting earlier, candles are the perfect way to add ambiance. The soft light can complement your holiday lights but can easily be forgotten and left to burn overnight or when you leave the house. Make sure you blow out the candle before you leave the room. Ensure you have your candles at least three feet from anything that could burn and on a non-flammable surface in case the wax runs over the edge.

Presents Under the Tree

Lithium-ion batteries power many of today’s most popular gifts, like phones, tablets, headphones, scooters, and robots. As use of these batteries increases, so does the number of related fire reports. Ensure you use proper charging devices, stop charging a device once the battery is full, and dispose of them through your local battery recycling sites, not the trash.

Keeping these few things in mind will help keep your holiday season merry and bright!
